Inserting Streaming Videos in PowerPoint 2013

Use the following workaround to insert streaming video (e.g., from YouTube) into a PowerPoint 2013 slide:

  1. Get URL of video.
  2. Use Clip Converter to download video: http://www.clipconverter.cc/ (MP4 format seems to work).
  3. In PowerPoint, choose Insert Video > Video on My PC.
  4. Locate the downloaded video, and select it to add it to the PowerPoint.

Note: there is an advertisement on the Clip Converter page for a "Male Gamers Only" game, but I couldn’t seem to find a third party video downloading site that was any less sleazy than this. I think it’s the best we’re going to get until Microsoft deals with the known issue.

Also, in the name of copyright, you may wish to point out to students that we’re using this workaround since the PowerPoint 2013 video embedding function isn’t working on the student computers. YouTube videos aren’t meant to be downloaded, and students should only download them in this way for class work.
